Can I get a hearing?

Since I think Friday I've had a problem with my hearing. It's a little bit like ringing and a little bit like being stuffed up. It's not painful, but it's annoying. The world seems muffled, distant. It's hard to hear what people are saying, and I'm saying "Excuse me?" a lot more.

Something very like this happened to me last year as well, and when I got my annual check-up I asked the doctor about it. He peered into my ears, and he said there wasn't anything wrong. He suggested I "equalize" the pressure, like divers do. It went away after two or three weeks.

I have no idea what it is. The lack of understanding is almost as bothersome as the symptoms.

I know someone who discovered they had a spider trapped in their ear. Just sayin'.

Ugh! Cue "Twilight Zone" music.

Off with thee to the ear-nose-and-throat guy. Seriously. Sometimes these things don't just go away on their own.

Yeah, I'll give it a week.

Having spent most of my life being "hard of hearing", and the last year or so being "profoundly deaf", yeah, I'd suggest that after a week or so you'd best find another MD. Not that much is likely to be able to be done about it, but...

If it is blocked ears, it might help to take a decongestant. Warmth and humidity might help too. When I was growing up, a standard home remedy was to drape a towel over one's head and stand over a boiling tea kettle.

Good suggestions. Thanks!

Getting ears syringed is very simple and almost cost free. Would have thought worth asking Dr to try that.or get ears candled somewhere local but not always as effective ( oddly did you notice that going on in background at start of The Congress for no real reason. .) tinnitus.?

I hope not! And yeah, that candling scene in The Congress seems pretty disconnected, but I think it's actually related to the boy's hearing problems that we learn about only later.

Ah of course! At time I thought just random surreality

I have constant tinnitus in both ears with otherwise normal hearing (i'm one of the small percentage that has neurological tinnitus, so i can't even say i lost my hearing due to something fun like rock concerts, YAY). I also have (apparently) small sinuses and constant non-allergic (i'm a medical weirdo!) rhinitis. So i've come to know my ears and nose pretty well.

The other year i suddenly developed a very annoying low-grade humming on top of the ringing. At urgent care it turned out my sinuses were almost 100% blocked up. They recommended decongestants or a spray like Afrin. Neti pot might help, too -- i didn't try that at the time.

Voidampersand's suggestion to also have your ears cleaned is a good one. You can get a kit from a pharmacy to do it yourself at home. The effectiveness is okay, especially if you get one with the drops to help soften any wax. And then you're saved a trip to the doctor. If you do go to the doctor, they'll probably use water to clear it out, which is a weird sensation but really effective. Watch out if they come after you with a tiny curette -- the one time a doc used that on me, they bumped my ear drum and i woke up lying on the table.

It's definitely gotten better since I wrote my post, but I've had my ears cleaned before and should look into doing that again. Thanks!

Glad it's clearing up! That feeling of being muffled and cut off is really damn annoying. Was also worried we'd have to communicate with you via pantomime at Potlatch.

If the hubbub is loud enough, we may still have to!
