Gum disease

When people tell you that problems with the gums can cause larger problems? I'm here to testify.

In my last post I mentioned I'd been to the dentist about a sore tooth, and she had concluded that it was actually an inflamed gum that was probably caused by something getting lodged in a pocket. She poked around in the pocket and then irrigated it with antibacterial fluid.

After that, I kept feeling worse and worse. I finally crawled into bed at 9pm, and I basically slept for the next 36 hours. I would wake up occasionally, and I got out of bed (with great difficultly) at least a couple of times. At around 2pm on Saturday I ate a protein shake and a nectarine. Meanwhile the pain in my tooth and swelling in the gum receded. But to say that I felt wiped out is a vast understatement. I could barely maintain consciousness.

I finally went to the ER around noon on Sunday. I debated about whether to go, because by then I had actually remained conscious for a couple of hours in a row, which is something I hadn't been able to do in the previous 36 hours. Improvement. But I wanted to know what was going on. The ER doctors concluded, based on what I told them and on the fact that my white blood cell count was lower than normal, that some bacteria had gotten into my bloodstream on Friday at the dentist's, and that my body basically dedicated all resources to fighting it off after that. Mission accomplished, it seemed. Bacteria defeated!

So I continued to feel better as Sunday progressed, and I ate two meals. I'm still feeling a little woozy today, but much better. Other than the anxiety that something else will get lodged in that gum pocket. [Sucks gums obsessively.]

Oh gosh that's super scary. Please keep getting better, and maybe in another day or two, cook some lentil stew!

That same tooth is starting to hurt again today, so I'm not sure I'm out of the woods yet. Fingers crossed! But if things go well, I hope to cook a big pot of something on Wednesday.

I'll save the weird tooth problem stories for later -- when you're completely recovered! Meanwhile, Damien & Juliette & I will try toasting your health on the next round, to see if that will help.

I'm feeling much, MUCH better today, so not to worry. Although I'd certainly welcome a toast to my health at this point. Sheesh!

Please give my fond regards to Damiette and Julien!
