More Moebius -- now with added Miyazaki

Drawing by Moebius from the magazine Libération, 1991

Well, I'm afraid that I went a bit crazy with my credit card on the internet. One of the things that grabbed my attention when I was reading about Moebius the other day was the claim that he and Miyazaki are fans of each others' work. I started thinking about that, and it occurred to me that Moebius was an influence on Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. So I was googling around today and found a conversation between Moebius and Miyazaki in which Miyazaki says, "I directed Nausicaä under Moebius' influence." That seemed pretty straightforward, and further googling led me to order the first volume of the Nausicaä manga, where the connection is pretty danged obvious.

A page from Miyazaki's Nausicaä

From there it was damn the torpedos, and I ordered copies of Moebius' Arzach and the complete Airtight Garage. It turns out, by the way, that there was a joint exhibition of Miyazaki and Moebius' artwork in Paris in 2004. There's a drawing of Nausicaä by Moebius that may come from that exhibition. That latter image is from a website called Quenched Consciousness that has lots and lots of artwork by Moebius, including full stories.

Humanoids is publishing THE INCAL CLASSIC COLLECTION. A slip-cased deluxe edition shipped just before Christmas. It has "original colors" and the MSRP is $99.95. It looks to be OP already, and an Amazon Marketplace dealer wants $279.99 for a used copy. LOL!!

A non-deluxe, non-slipcased edition was solicited in March and is probably just about to ship. Amazon wants MSRP of $44.95 but Tales of Wonder offers it for $27.89.

You'd better lock up your credit card.

Many thanks for the pointer to the discount price on the cheaper edition. I had seen that the cheaper edition was coming out, but I hadn't seen it anywhere for that price!

One complaint I've heard about the edition of Airtight Garage that I just bought is that the colors were *not* according to the original scheme. But I was too impatient to wait for a better edition, since I couldn't find any rumors of such.

Like, whoah.

Is that for the Miyazaki-Moebius connection, or for the images themselves?

All of the above!

Wow that's so cool. I adore Miyazaki and had no idea Moebius was such an influence on him. It's funny how we've gone off on our seperate little obsesive pilgrimages as a result of seeing that film:-) vaguely connectedly, I am currently holed up at fjm s in a spare room full of every juvenile sf novel I ever read and tempted to just hide out here and read my way through them..!

For me the first jolt was the death of Jeff Jones, but the movie definitely pushed me over the edge. I read issues 11-21 of the original X-Men, and I have a collection of Grant Morrison X-Men to look at too.

Oh those Morrison X men are fab. I may have to get them myself.. Emma Frost is trnasformed in them .

Looks as though what I got collects issues #118 - 126.

Thus history repays the japanese for their influence on french artists a century before. It's karma, man...
